>> the fiscal cliff is basically a series of an expiration of tax cuts as well as some new taxes combined with spending cuts that if we don't reach by the end of the year, we're going to go over, okay? there's a few main points that are really important to look at. the ones that are going to impact average americans most, that's what you need to consider. the first is the expiration of the bush-era tax cuts. what this means is that basically income tax rates are going to go up for nearly all american taxpayers. president obama, of course, is looking to avert the cliff by setting a threshold whereby the higher income earners will pay more but that the middle income and low income earners won't pay more. also to consider is the application of the amt, the alternative minimum tax. this will apply to taxes in 2012. it's one that's actually looking back a little bit and what's going to happen is you're going to see 30 million more americans be subjected to this tax that weren't before. in addition to that, we're also looking at the expiration of the payroll tax holiday. what that could mean is
